Both games were spirited but nothing out of hand on the field. All four teams shared the same dressing room and there were no incidents or even flash points there. Bill Caulfield reffed ERRFC v Malibu first. I reffed Red Rhinos v Beaumont second. While leaving the field after the second game, I overheard a young woman in the stands say to another sitting next to her, "If that girl hits me, I don't care. I'll call the cops." I thought nothing of it. Having enjoyed a terrific conversation with the Staples Center organizer, Bill Caulfield, his wife Petra and I were the last to leave. As we walked outside it looked like a scene from Westside Story. There was fighting, pushing and shoving all over the street. I watched as several Red Rhinos guys surrounded one of the Beaumont guys. One Red Rhino attacked from behind, placing him in a choke hold and dragging him to the ground. As they fell, the other two jumped in with punchs. At that point another Beaumont player jumped in to help. As I arrived, the #8 from Red Rhinos ran up and kicked the Beaumont player to the head twice. I grabbed him and shoved him away. Upon seeing it was me, he immediately stepped away. At this point I stood over the pile of guys pulling one off at a time. I know that Bill Caulfield was at my shoulder pulling players apart as was a Mr. Garcia of Staples Security. After we got everyone separated the Red Rhinos left while the Beaumont player who had been on the ground continued ranting and yelling after them. His teammates eventually got him in check and they all left. This was the closest incident to me so it was the one that I saw most clearly and the one into which I got involved. There were at least 6 other tussles going on being sorted out by Staples Center Security. After it was all over, I talked with Staples Security to find out what had happened. According to the reports they were going to file, some female supports of the Red Rhinos had been verbally aggressive in the stands and words were exchanged. The girl from Beaumont, not feeling comfortable walking out by herself, asked security for an escort out. When they got outside, the Red Rhinos supports were waiting for them. Again, words were exchanged, mostly from the Red Rhinos supporters. When the teams came out, the Red Rhinos aggressively joined in supporting their supporters. Beaumont, following the Red Rhinos out, joined in. That's when I came out. I believe that alcohol had a hand in this. The players had been drinking through the game and the one Beaumont player was "stupidly" drunk. I don't believe that he took part in the game. However, this behavior is not new to the Red Rhinos. Their actions were consistent to their behavior a couple years ago at Eagle Rock and again last year in San Luis Obispo at the Tri-Tip Tournament. SuspensionRecommendation: Red Rhinos team on disciplinary probation until they can prove that they can play without the resulting violence. Similar probation on the Beaumont player. Their captain is aware of the player's name. AdditionalRecommendation: N/A
